Heard County Extension Office

Our mission is to extend lifelong learning to Georgia citizens through unbiased, research-based education in agriculture, the environment, communities, youth and families.

The Heard County Extension office offers residents many Agricultural Services including but not limited to soil and water analysis. Through Heard County Extension we also have the 4-H youth development program in which students ages 9-18 (4th-12th grade) can participate in numerous 4-H activities. Our 4-H Agent provides in school club meetings monthly (4th-5th grades) and after school club meetings (6th-8th grades). Grades 9th-12th meet at the 4H office.

Heard? County is located in West Central Georgia. The county seat is in Franklin, Ga. The county is rich in history offering many places to visit. Heard County is home to the Heard County Historical Center and Museum, Flat Rock Campground, and many other tourist and historical attractions.

PFAS: Perfluoroalkyl and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances
(B 1577) Perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of more than 9,000 manmade chemicals that have been in use worldwide since 1940, primarily in industry and numerous commercial and consumer products. The widespread use of PFAS for the past several decades has raised concerns due to their persistence, bioaccumulative nature, and potential adverse health effects. This publication provides information about the background, uses, and environmental and human health consequences of PFAS chemicals, as well as the EPA's primary drinking water regulation standards and water treatment systems for removal/reduction of these chemicals from drinking water. Testing options and PFAS monitoring efforts by the Georgia EPD are included along with references for further reading.

This publication accumulates information about the background, uses, and environmental and human health consequences of PFAS chemicals.
(B 1541) This bulletin provides the scientific basis and food-safety framework for developing a food safety plan for acid/acidified foods. This includes practical food-safety examples for the acidified foods, including foundational support of a recordkeeping system and forms. Learning how to develop a process-flow diagram, developing recordkeeping forms, and applying food-safety principles during acid/acidified-food production will provide a processor with a better understanding of how a systematic approach to food-safety principles should be applied during the production, processing, packaging, storage, and distribution of acid/acidified foods. This publication contains information on how to develop a plan, including FDA requirements for developing a food safety plan, and sample recordkeeping forms to guide an acid/acidified food processor to safely process, package, and distribute acidified foods in commerce.
