The main industry in Toombs County is Agriculture and Agribusiness. Toombs County is most known for being the home of the state vegetable the Vidalia Sweet Onion. Farming, produce processing, packing, and shipping are all major industries. Toombs County ranks fourth in total vegetable in the state with a farm gate vegetable total over 80 million dollars.?

The agriculture in Toombs County is very diverse. Some the major vegetables grown in Toombs County include onions, sweet corn, greens, cabbage, peppers, and watermelons. Toombs County also grows many major row crops including cotton, corn, soybeans, peanuts, wheat, rye, and oats. Toombs County also has commercial nursery production and commercial greenhouse vegetable transplant production. Toombs County has 1,000 acres of pecan production, as well as the beginnings of olive production.


Leadership Toombs/Montgomery Chamber Class


This tour is one of the education aspects of the Toombs/Montgomery Leadership class. The agent coordinates this tour in both Toombs and Montgomery counties to display the importance of agriculture to this area. This tour gives many community leaders a firsthand look at different aspects of agricultural production. The agent during this tour, also give two presentations, one on the farm gate values of both counties as well as an overview of the 海角官方首页 Vidalia Onion and Vegetable Research Center. ?This tour is attended by approximately 30 future community leaders each year.

Advancement and Production of Vidalia Onions


The Extension Office works tirelessly in advancing the production practices of the Vidalia Onion through annual research projects, field days, production updates, and on site consultations. The County Agent works with growers to focus on flavor quality, disease control and prevention, variety selection, and production practices. The Agent’s research on plant population has provided growers with information to give themselves a better product mix for the consumers, as well as making them potentially more profitable. The candidate is continually working on research to help provide better varieties as well as better flavor profiles for onions.
