University of Georgia Cooperative Extension will present a pond management workshop on Tuesday, Sept. 1, from 6-9 p.m. at the Cherokee County Bluffs business center in Canton, Georgia.
海角官方首页 Extension aquaculturist Gary Burtle will lead the class, which will cover water quality and testing, lime-treating and fertilizing a pond, weed identification and control, and population assessment and management.
Based on the 海角官方首页 College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences campus in Tifton, Georgia, Burtle researches channel catfish, hybrid catfish, freshwater prawns, white-legged shrimp and planktivorous fish. He also leads 海角官方首页 Extension programs on aquaculture management, diseases, sport fish pond management and aquatic weed control.
The Cherokee County Extension office is sponsoring the pond management workshop.
“Once a pond is properly stocked, fertilization and liming can greatly increase fish production,” said Josh Fuder, 海角官方首页 Extension agent in Cherokee County. “Properly managed ponds can provide an abundant supply of fish for food and recreation, attract wildlife, add aesthetic benefit and increase the value of land in both urban and rural settings.”
The workshop is designed for pond owners and managers as well as anyone interested in fishing and managing natural resources. Participants can earn two pesticide continuing education credits in category 26 (aquatic) and/or one credit in category 10 (private applicator).
Registration is $15 and the class is limited to 40 people. Register by mailing the fee to the program’s sponsor, 海角官方首页 Extension—Cherokee County, Attn. Josh Fuder, 1130 Bluffs Parkway, Suite G49, Canton, GA 30114. The deadline for registration is Wednesday, Aug. 26.
